150 million monthly active users for Threads

Threads, Meta's social network aimed at competing with platforms like Twitter, has reached a significant milestone of 150 million monthly active users, as announced by Mark Zuckerberg during Meta's Q1 2024 earnings call. This marks a notable increase from the 130 million users reported in February.

In recent months, Threads has made strides towards integration with ActivityPub, a decentralized protocol utilized by networks such as Mastodon. In March, Threads allowed U.S.-based users over 18 to link their accounts to the Fediverse, enabling their posts to be visible on other servers.

Meta also plans to release Threads' API to a broader range of developers by June, enabling them to create experiences around the social network. However, it remains uncertain whether Threads will permit developers to create fully functional third-party clients.

Despite Meta's recent launch of an AI chatbot across its other platforms, Threads was not included, possibly due to its lack of native direct messaging functionality.

Recently, Threads introduced a test feature enabling users to automatically archive their posts after a specified period. Additionally, users can individually archive or unarchive posts and make them public.

While Threads is still in its early stages, Meta has steadily expanded its user base. However, it differs from X (the app mentioned earlier in the article) as Instagram Head Adam Mosseri clarified in October that Threads would not prioritize news content. Nevertheless, Meta's social network continues to gain traction, with Threads reportedly surpassing X in daily active users in the U.S. according to app analytics firm Apptopia, as reported by Business Insider.
