Architectural wonder in Lagos

The "Lantern House," designed by Nigerian architect Tosin Oshinowo and her firm, cmDesign Atelier, stands as a testament to sustainable luxury in one of Africa's most exclusive neighborhoods. Located on Banana Island in Lagos, Nigeria, this private residence boasts five bedrooms, seven bathrooms, and three stories, all powered entirely by solar energy.

Designed with a minimalist aesthetic and an emphasis on natural light, the Lantern House contrasts its clean lines with bold colors and patterns in its interior design. The home features a fully automated smart system and a double helical staircase, adding to its modern appeal.

Named for the glow emitted by the internal lighting through its patterned steel screening, the Lantern House offers layers of privacy that nod to traditional Yoruba household settings. Despite challenges posed by the island's exclusivity and strict working regulations, Oshinowo and her team successfully brought their vision to life, showcasing meticulous attention to detail and craftsmanship.

Beyond her architectural achievements, Oshinowo's work extends to curating the Sharjah Architecture Triennial, where she explores themes of impermanence, adaptability, and sustainability. As the first African woman to curate this prestigious event, Oshinowo's contributions highlight the global relevance of African architectural perspectives and innovations.
