US benefit from guaranteed basic-income programs

Guaranteed basic-income programs are providing a vital financial lifeline to low-income residents in 11 states across the US. Despite opposition from some lawmakers, these programs continue to operate, offering participants a monthly stipend with no strings attached. The programs aim to help recipients afford basic necessities like rent, groceries, and transportation.
Over 50 municipalities have implemented or are planning to implement guaranteed basic-income programs since 2019. Participants typically fall below the federal poverty line, and some programs focus on specific populations like new mothers, households with children, or people experiencing homelessness.
The programs offer varying monthly amounts, from $100 to $1,000, for a set period. Participants can use the funds as they see fit, and many report using the money for essential expenses. The element of choice is a key aspect of these programs, allowing recipients to prioritize their needs.
Some examples of these programs include:
  • California's Breathe program in Los Angeles, offering $1,000 monthly for three years to 1,000 low-income households
  • Colorado's Denver Basic Income Project, providing $1,000 monthly for a year to 800 unhoused and low-income households
  • Georgia's Resilience and Opportunity Fund, offering average payments of $850 monthly over 24 months to 650 low-income Black women
  • Illinois' Cook County Promise, providing $500 monthly for 24 months to 3,250 low-to-moderate-income families
Despite legislative opposition, guaranteed basic-income programs continue to operate and expand, offering a vital safety net to low-income residents. As Ingrid Sullivan, a participant in San Antonio's program, noted, "For the first time, I can breathe." These programs demonstrate the potential of guaranteed basic income to alleviate poverty and promote financial stability.
