The United States is facing a demographic crisis

The United States is facing a demographic crisis, with a rapidly aging population and a low fertility rate. However, immigration is the one factor preventing the country's population from shrinking, according to new projections from the US Census Bureau.
Without immigration, the US population would begin to decline in 2044, and if borders were closed completely, the decline would start next year. The consistent arrival of newcomers is expected to keep America from aging as rapidly as Japan and other major economies.
The Census Bureau's new projections show that America's population will shrink after 2080, but immigration is the primary demographic antidote for low fertility. Immigrants inject youth, labor, and innovation into societies, and at high enough numbers, they offset aging trends.
However, the Republican Party's anti-immigrant sentiment, fueled by anxiety over demographic change, threatens to undermine this demographic stability. Former President Donald Trump has called for detention camps and mass deportations, which would only hasten the country's demographic decline.
Research has shown that informing people about the realities of demographic aging can persuade them to open their minds about immigration. A survey of over 20,000 adults across 19 European countries found that respondents who were informed about demographic trends were more likely to support increased immigration numbers.
The findings of this research and the Census Bureau report come at a time when American and European political leaders are scrambling to fortify their borders. However, there is a countervailing desire to sustain the national population, and investing in an orderly immigration system that sustains the nation into the future is crucial.
In conclusion, immigration is the one reason America's population isn't about to start shrinking. It is essential to address the country's demographic challenges through a comprehensive approach that includes immigration, rather than relying on anti-immigrant sentiment and policies that would only exacerbate the problem. By doing so, the US can ensure a brighter future for generations to come.
