DeSantis claims that the ban is necessary to protect traditional agriculture and cattle ranchers, stating that he is "fighting against an ideology that ultimately wants to eliminate meat production in the US and around the globe". Lab-grown meat, also known as cultivated meat, is created by extracting cells from an animal and feeding them nutrients to produce a genetically identical product to traditional meat. Good Meat, a company that produces lab-grown meat, expressed disappointment at the new law, stating that it is "telling consumers what meat they can or cannot purchase" and restricting individual liberty.
