King Charles has decided not to meet with his son Prince Harry during Harry's recent visit to London, and a friend of Charles and Queen Camilla has revealed that it's due to Harry's "cruel" comments about Camilla in his memoir, Spare. Harry had described Camilla as "dangerous" and a "villain" and said she "sacrificed me on her personal PR altar."
The friend told The Daily Beast that Harry's remarks made it difficult for Charles to meet with him, as he had to choose between his son and his wife. "Harry has made it very clear, very publicly, that he despises her. He has forced Charles to choose, which was a very silly thing to do because Camilla and he both chose each other a long time ago."
Another source, a friend of William and Kate's, quipped that it's no surprise Charles didn't invite Harry over for tea, given the way he portrayed Camilla in his book.
A former Buckingham Palace staffer also said that the palace is happy to keep Harry and Meghan at a distance, as their presence can be distracting. "The whole point of being exiled is that you are out of sight and out of mind."
Harry's statement saying his father had declined to meet him was also criticized as "childish" and "petulant foot-stamping."
Meanwhile, Prince William has been given a new military role as Colonel-in-Chief of the Army Air Corps, a position that had been earmarked for Harry before his departure from the royal family.
It's clear that the rift between Harry and the rest of the royal family, particularly Camilla, is still wide. And with Charles choosing to prioritize his wife over his son, it seems unlikely that Harry will be welcomed back into the fold anytime soon.
