Russia is seeking to exploit a "window of opportunity" to increase attacks on Ukraine

Western intelligence officials believe Russia is seeking to exploit a "window of opportunity" to increase attacks on Ukraine, taking advantage of the delay in the arrival of new US military aid. Despite the recent approval of a security package, there will be a significant lag time before the assistance makes a substantial impact on the frontlines. Russia is expected to intensify air and ground attacks to consolidate earlier gains and make further progress before the window closes.
The delay in approving the funding has already resulted in real costs for Ukrainian forces, with territory lost and casualties mounting. Russian forces are expected to attempt to make further gains, particularly in the east, where they have recently made significant advances. Ukrainian officials are concerned about a further partial mobilization by Russia to send more manpower to the frontlines, as Ukraine struggles with its own manpower shortage.
The near-term threat of stepped-up attacks is tied to Russian plans for a larger offensive early this summer. Even with the arrival of new assistance, Ukrainian prospects are bleak, with one US military official describing the situation as "hold the line at best." Ukrainian officials agree, saying it will be challenging to regain territory and that the focus is on stabilizing the situation and winning time.
Russian forces have recently made significant advances on the eastern front, pushing toward key points such as Pokrovsk, Chasiv Yar, and Kurakhove. The progress has prompted warnings from senior Ukrainian military officials of a possible threat to Kyiv's supply lines and hubs in the east, which are now perilously close to being in range of superior Russian firepower.
Ukrainian officials are urging more support from the international community, hoping that other countries will follow the US example and provide much-needed assistance. Without it, Ukraine faces a difficult and uncertain future, with Russian forces poised to make further gains and consolidate their control over Ukrainian territory.
