Speaker Mike Johnson will retain his leadership position

The House of Representatives has voted to block Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene's effort to oust Speaker Mike Johnson from his leadership position. The vote, which was supported by Democrats, brings an end to the most serious challenge to Johnson's speakership to date.
Greene had been threatening to trigger a vote against Johnson for weeks, which had reopened divisions within the House GOP conference. Many members opposed ousting Johnson, who was elected speaker last year after conservative hardliners voted to remove former Speaker Kevin McCarthy.
The vote to table Greene's push to remove Johnson was 359 to 43, with 11 Republicans voting against tabling. Democratic leadership had announced that they would help Johnson keep his job by voting to table.
Despite the defeat, Greene did not rule out forcing another vote against Johnson in the future. She pointed to a statement from former President Donald Trump on Truth Social, which suggested that Republicans may be in a position to vote on a motion to vacate at some point.
Greene and Johnson had met earlier in the week to discuss her concerns with his leadership and her priorities. However, House Republicans were caught off guard by Greene's decision to trigger her motion, which started a two-legislative-day clock for GOP leaders to hold a vote on her measure.
Johnson spoke briefly with reporters following the vote, calling Greene's campaign against him "misguided" and thanking colleagues for a "show of confidence" in his leadership. He also stated that he intends to do his job and do what he believes is right, regardless of the outcome.
The failed ouster effort gives Johnson the opportunity to argue that it is time to move on to other issues. However, the support from Democrats may open him up to more criticism from his right flank.
In the end, the vote to block Greene's effort to oust Johnson is a significant blow to her campaign and a victory for Johnson's leadership. However, the divisions within the House GOP conference remain, and it is unclear what the future holds for Johnson's speakership.
