US couple found unexpected happiness in Ronda, Spain

After facing numerous challenges, including unsuccessful IVF attempts and health issues, US couple Jason Luban and Selena Medlen found unexpected happiness in Ronda, Spain. The couple, who were based in Oakland, California, had visited Ronda in 2016 and were captivated by its beauty and charm. Despite initial reservations, they decided to relocate to Ronda, selling their belongings and leaving their old life behind.
The transition wasn't without its challenges. They struggled to find a long-term rental property, and the town seemed less magical when they returned after a festival. However, they persevered and soon found an apartment. Joining a language school to learn Spanish proved to be a turning point, helping them form a community and connect with other expats.
Seven years on, the couple are settled in Ronda, having made countless friends and embracing the local culture. They've adopted a more relaxed lifestyle, limiting their work to 20 hours a week and exploring Spain in their free time. Luban's health has improved significantly, and he's become a proud member of the local cycling club.
While they miss the US and return annually, they have no regrets about their decision. "This country just keeps showing us new layers of what it's best at: love and sanity. We're not done here yet," says Luban. Their story is a testament to the power of taking a leap of faith and embracing change, even in the face of adversity.
