FDA Warns Against 'Microdosing Chocolate Bars' After Hospitalizations

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning consumers and retailers to avoid eating, selling, or serving any of Diamond Shruumz's microdosing chocolate bars. This comes after several people were hospitalized due to severe reactions from consuming the products.

According to the FDA advisory, eight people reported falling ill after eating Diamond Shruumz's chocolate bars. Out of those eight, six people have been hospitalized across four different states - Arizona, Indiana, Nevada, and Pennsylvania.

The symptoms experienced by those who consumed the chocolate bars were quite severe, including seizures, loss of consciousness, confusion, sleepiness, agitation, abnormal heart rates, nausea, and vomiting. No deaths have been linked to the products so far.

Microdosing refers to the practice of consuming small, sub-perceptual doses of psychedelic drugs like psilocybin (found in magic mushrooms) in order to potentially improve mood and focus. While Diamond Shruumz claims their chocolate bars do not contain any scheduled drugs, the FDA is investigating the illnesses alongside the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Poison Control Centers, and state/local partners.

The company states on their website that the chocolate bars are made with a "proprietary blend of nootropic and functional mushrooms." Nootropics are supplements or drugs that are claimed to enhance cognitive function. However, it seems the blend in these chocolate bars is causing serious adverse reactions in some consumers.

Since the FDA's warning, Diamond Shruumz has continued posting promotional content on social media without addressing the reported hospitalizations. The agency recommends that anyone who becomes ill after consuming these chocolate bars should immediately contact a healthcare provider and the Poison Help Line.

This situation highlights the potential dangers of unregulated "functional" or "microdosing" products, even if they claim to be free of illegal substances. Consumers should be extremely cautious about ingestible items making bold cognitive enhancement claims, as the composition and safety of these products is often unclear.

If you or someone you know has had an adverse reaction to Diamond Shruumz chocolate bars or any similar products, please share your experience in the comments below. Consumer safety and transparency from manufacturers in this space is paramount. Together we can work to ensure these types of incidents do not continue to occur.
