In a compassionate move, Singapore Airlines has announced that it will be offering compensation to passengers injured during a recent harrowing flight incident. On May 20th, 2024, flight SQ321 from London to Singapore encountered severe turbulence while flying over Myanmar, resulting in dozens of injuries and tragically, one fatality.

According to the CNN report, the Boeing 777-300ER aircraft was about 10 hours into its flight and in the middle of the meal service when it hit the extreme turbulence. Data from the flight tracking site FlightRadar24 showed the plane suddenly dipping and climbing rapidly, with the entire disruption lasting around 90 seconds.

The turbulence was likely caused by rapidly developing thunderstorms in the area, as analysis by CNN Weather suggested. Tragically, a 73-year-old British passenger, Geoff Kitchen, suffered a suspected heart attack and died as a result of the incident. Around 10 other passengers remained hospitalized in Thailand over two weeks later, with one, Kerry Jordan, left paralyzed from the chest down.

In response to this harrowing event, Singapore Airlines has moved swiftly to offer compensation to those affected. Passengers who sustained minor injuries have each been offered $10,000, while those with more serious injuries have been invited to discuss a larger offer. The airline stated that passengers assessed as having "sustained serious injuries, requiring long-term medical care, and requesting financial assistance are offered an advance payment of US$25,000 to address their immediate needs." This will be considered part of the final compensation package.

Additionally, the airline has announced that all passengers on flight SQ321 will be refunded the cost of their tickets. This comprehensive response demonstrates Singapore Airlines' commitment to supporting those impacted by this traumatic incident.
