Brittney Griner Opens Up About Her Detention in Russia: "I Wanted to Take My Life More Than Once"
WNBA star Brittney Griner has spoken out about the mental anguish she endured during her time in Russian detention, revealing that she considered taking her own life on multiple occasions. In an interview with ABC's "20/20," Griner shared the harrowing details of her experience, including the desperate thoughts that plagued her mind.
Griner was detained in Russia in February 2022 and spent almost 300 days in custody before being released in December 2022 as part of a prisoner swap. During her time in detention, she was subjected to harsh conditions, including dirty cells, a lack of basic amenities, and constant surveillance.
The mental toll of her detention was immense, with Griner revealing that she felt like giving up on multiple occasions. "I wanted to take my life more than once in those first weeks," she said. "I felt like leaving here so badly. I just didn't think I could get through what I needed to get through."
Griner's desire to escape her situation was overwhelming, but she was aware of the potential consequences of her actions. "I definitely thought about it," she said. "But then, I was just like, 'What if they didn't release my body to my family?' I can't put them through that. I have to endure this."
In addition to the harsh conditions and mental anguish, Griner was also forced to write a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, asking for forgiveness. "They made me write this letter," she said. "It was in Russian. I had to basically ask for forgiveness and thanks from their so-called great leader. I didn't want to do it, but at the same time, I want to come home."
Griner's experience in Russia has highlighted the challenges faced by WNBA players, who often have to play overseas during the offseason to supplement their income. The Phoenix Mercury star is entering her 11th WNBA season and has recently announced that she is expecting her first child with her wife Cherelle.
Despite the challenges she faced, Griner remains determined and focused on her career. She is in contention for a spot on the US team for this year's Paris Olympics and is eager to get back on the court. Her story is a testament to the resilience and strength of women's basketball players, and her courage in sharing her experience will undoubtedly inspire others.
