Sebastian Steudtner: The Big Wave Surfer Who Finds Peace at the Mercy of Mother Nature
At 38 years old, Sebastian Steudtner has dedicated his life to chasing the biggest waves on the planet. As a big wave surfer, he has faced some of the most treacherous conditions in the ocean, but it's in these moments of chaos that he finds a sense of peace.
Steudtner's journey began when he was just nine years old, on a family holiday in Europe. He caught his first wave and was hooked. By the time he was 13, he had told his parents he wanted to move to Hawaii to pursue his dream of becoming a professional surfer. Three years later, he made the move and began his journey under the guidance of a local mentor.
Big wave surfing is not for the faint of heart. It requires a level of physical strength and mental fortitude that few possess. Steudtner has spent years honing his skills, preparing for the worst-case scenario, and calculating risks. He believes that taking risks is necessary to achieve his dreams.
In 2020, Steudtner set the record for the biggest wave surfed, riding a 26.21-meter (86-foot) wave. But he didn't stop there. He continued to push himself, working with a team of experts to improve his equipment and his own performance. He also developed new safety systems for the surfing community.
Recently, Steudtner may have broken his own record, surfing a monster wave in Nazaré, Portugal, that was provisionally measured at 28.57 meters (93.72 feet). While the record is still pending official ratification, Steudtner is more focused on the journey than the destination.
For him, big wave surfing is not just about the thrill of the ride; it's about being connected to nature and finding a sense of peace in the midst of chaos. "It's complete chaos and you would think, as an outsider, it's terrifying," he says. "But it's so peaceful to me. Everything becomes simple. Life in general, you know, you are consistently dealing with a hundred different things and fighting problems and challenges and you're moving really quick. Being exposed to this radical, physical, ginormous energy, and being humbled by it makes me really peaceful."
Steudtner's love for adventure and his desire to push himself to the limits have driven him to explore other sports, including windsurfing, boxing, and downhill skiing. But it's big wave surfing that has most shaped his perspective on life.
"It's the largest physical energy in the ocean which is about to explode on the shore, and I realize how small, little, insignificant and nothing we are as humans compared to nature," he says. "On the other hand, it's me as this little insignificant human and I can perform. I can ride the wave the way I want to ride the wave. And that's a very powerful feeling."
Steudtner's story is one of perseverance, dedication, and a passion for life. He is a reminder that with hard work and determination, we can achieve our dreams and find peace in the most unexpected places.
