US President Joe Biden and Jordan's King Abdullah II met at the White House

US President Joe Biden and Jordan's King Abdullah II met at the White House on Monday to discuss the ongoing crisis in Gaza. According to a White House readout, they reaffirmed their commitment to working together towards a lasting end to the conflict and emphasized the need for an immediate release of hostages held by Hamas and a sustainable ceasefire. This would allow for a surge in humanitarian assistance to reach Gaza safely.
Both leaders reiterated their commitment to facilitating the increased delivery of life-saving aid to Palestinian civilians in Gaza. Biden thanked the king for his leadership and partnership in this effort. The king warned Biden that an Israeli attack on Rafah, where 1.4 million Palestinians are internally displaced, could lead to a new massacre.
Meanwhile, Israeli airstrikes killed multiple people in Rafah early Tuesday, according to Palestinian officials. The Palestinian Civil Defense reported rescuing several injured individuals from under the rubble of homes bombed by Israeli warplanes. At least eight Palestinians were killed in two attacks on Rafah, with some reports suggesting 11 dead.
The airstrikes come after Israel reiterated its commitment to an offensive in southern Gaza, deeming ceasefire terms accepted by Hamas "far from" meeting its demands. The situation remains dire, with the international community urging a ceasefire and an end to the violence. The US and Jordanian leaders' meeting highlights the ongoing diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis and ensure a durable, lasting peace, including a pathway to a Palestinian state with security guarantees for Israel.
