Global Airlines Raise Profit Outlook as Demand Recovers

The global airline industry has raised its profit outlook for 2024, driven by a strong recovery in demand for air travel. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has forecast that the industry will return to profitability in 2024, with a net profit of $4.7 billion, compared to a net loss of $11.6 billion in 2020.

The improved outlook is attributed to a number of factors, including a significant increase in demand for air travel, a decline in fuel prices, and a reduction in capacity due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

"The airline industry has faced unprecedented challenges over the past two years, but we are now seeing a strong recovery in demand," said Willie Walsh, IATA's Director General. "We expect the industry to return to profitability in 2024, driven by a combination of increased demand, lower fuel costs, and reduced capacity."

The IATA forecast is based on a number of assumptions, including an average fuel price of $65 per barrel, which is lower than the current price of around $70 per barrel. The association also assumes that the COVID-19 pandemic will continue to have an impact on the industry, but that this impact will be less severe than in previous years.

The improved outlook is welcome news for the airline industry, which has been severely impacted by the pandemic. Many airlines have had to cut capacity, reduce staff, and implement cost-cutting measures to stay afloat.

"Despite the challenges we have faced, we are seeing a strong recovery in demand for air travel," said Walsh. "We expect this trend to continue, driven by a combination of factors including increased vaccinations, relaxed travel restrictions, and improving economic conditions."
