'I'm still haunted by the sounds': Pakistan's flood survivors recount their ordeal

The devastating floods in Pakistan have left millions of people homeless, with many still struggling to come to terms with the trauma they experienced. The BBC spoke to survivors who recounted their harrowing experiences, describing the sounds of destruction and the struggles they faced in the aftermath.

A Catastrophe of Epic Proportions

The floods, which began in June 2022, have affected over 33 million people across Pakistan, with nearly 1,000 fatalities reported. The disaster has left a trail of destruction, with entire towns and cities submerged under water. The Pakistani government has declared a national emergency, with international aid pouring in to help alleviate the suffering.

Survivor Stories

One survivor, 35-year-old Sajida, described the sounds of destruction as "still haunting" her. She recalled the moment her home was swept away by the floodwaters, leaving her family with nothing. "I'm still haunted by the sounds of destruction," she said. "The sound of roofs caving in, the sound of people screaming for help. It's still echoing in my mind."

Another survivor, 28-year-old Imran, described the struggles he faced in the aftermath of the disaster. He and his family were forced to take shelter in a makeshift camp, where they had to contend with limited food and water. "We had to wait for days to get food and water," he said. "It was like being in a nightmare. We were stuck in a cycle of uncertainty and fear."

Psychological Trauma

The floods have not only left physical devastation but also psychological trauma. Many survivors are struggling to cope with the trauma they experienced, and are seeking help from mental health professionals. "The trauma is real," said Dr. Shazia Khan, a psychologist who has been working with flood survivors. "These people have experienced something that no one should ever have to experience. We need to provide them with support and care to help them heal."
