Concerns Mount for Missing American and Australian Tourists in Mexico
Mexican authorities are questioning three individuals in connection with the disappearance of three tourists, including an American and two Australian brothers, who went missing while on a surfing and camping trip in the Ensenada area.
Jack Carter Rhoad, an American, and Australian brothers Jake and Callum Robinson were reported missing on April 29. The three friends were last seen in the municipality of Ensenada, about 60 miles south of Tijuana.
A search operation is underway, and authorities have found a vehicle, tents, and a cell phone in the area where the men were last seen. Baja California's chief public prosecutor, Maria Elena Andrade Ramirez, confirmed that three Mexican nationals are being questioned in connection with the case, although it is unclear if they are suspects.
The disappearance has raised concerns due to the region's history of cartel violence, although it is rare in tourist areas like Ensenada. The Australian brothers' mother, Debra Robinson, has taken to social media to appeal for information, expressing concern about Callum's diabetes and the fact that the three friends have been unreachable since April 27.
Jake, 30, is a doctor from Perth, Western Australia, while Callum, 33, lives in San Diego, California, and is a member of Australia's national lacrosse team. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has expressed concern over the brothers' disappearance, hoping for a positive outcome.
Mexican authorities are working with US and Australian authorities to investigate the disappearance. The US consulate in Tijuana has been contacted for comment.
The incident highlights the importance of safety and awareness while traveling, especially in areas with a history of violence. The search for the missing tourists continues, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
