India's Leader Faces Reckoning with its Poor

India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi has long been hailed as a leader who has lifted millions of people out of poverty and boosted the country's economic growth. However, a recent report by the World Bank has revealed that India's poor are still struggling to access basic services, such as healthcare and education, and that poverty remains a major challenge for the country.

The report, which was published earlier this year, found that over 60% of India's population lives in poverty, with many struggling to access basic services such as healthcare, education, and sanitation. The report also found that poverty is particularly prevalent in rural areas, where many people lack access to basic infrastructure such as roads, electricity, and water.

The findings of the report have sparked concerns about the effectiveness of Modi's government in addressing poverty and improving the lives of India's poorest citizens. The report highlights the need for greater investment in social services and infrastructure to address the deep-seated issues facing India's poor.

"The government needs to do more to address the deep-rooted issues facing India's poor," said Ashwini Deshpande, an economist at the Delhi School of Economics. "We need to see more investment in social services and infrastructure to address the basic needs of the poor."

The report has also highlighted the need for greater transparency and accountability in the government's efforts to address poverty. Many critics have accused Modi's government of being opaque and lacking accountability in its dealings with the poor.

"The government needs to be more transparent and accountable in its efforts to address poverty," said Arun Maira, a former member of the Planning Commission. "We need to see more data and analysis on how poverty is being addressed, and we need to hold those responsible for addressing poverty accountable."
