China Urges Stability in Talks with Blinken, Warns Against 'Downward Spiral'

Chinese leader Xi Jinping emphasized the need for partnership between the United States and China, urging stability rather than confrontation during a meeting with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Beijing's Great Hall of the People. This dialogue, part of Blinken's three-day visit to China, underscores efforts to stabilize relations and address various contentious issues, including technology and Taiwan.

Xi expressed the desire for a confident and prosperous United States, hoping for positive perceptions of China's development. Emphasizing partnership over adversity, Xi highlighted the importance of mutual success rather than mutual harm between the two nations.

However, tensions persist, particularly regarding US actions perceived by China as hindrances to its development, such as controls on technology exports and investment restrictions. Blinken reassured Xi of the US commitment to communication and responsible management of differences to prevent misunderstandings and miscalculations.

Despite efforts to foster stability, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi warned of a potential "downward spiral" in US-China relations. He emphasized the choice between cooperation and conflict, urging both countries to lead international cooperation while avoiding rivalry and confrontation.

In discussions with Blinken, Wang criticized US measures targeting China's economy and technology sector, accusing the US of containment rather than fair competition. He emphasized the need for mutual understanding and clarity on areas of disagreement.

Blinken's visit marks a continuation of high-level engagements aimed at easing tensions between the two superpowers. Both sides discussed cooperation on various issues, including counternarcotics and military communication, while acknowledging significant differences.

Looking ahead, discussions on artificial intelligence risks and safety are scheduled in the coming weeks, reflecting ongoing efforts to address mutual concerns. However, challenges remain, particularly regarding China's support for Russia and tensions in the Taiwan Strait.

As the US and China navigate complex geopolitical issues, maintaining peace and stability in key regions like Taiwan and the Middle East remains paramount. Both sides exchanged views on various global issues, highlighting the need for dialogue and cooperation to address shared challenges.
