Despite campus unrest US unwavering in support of Israel

White House Stays Firm on Israel Support Despite Progressive Frustration and Campus Unrest

When President Joe Biden visited Virginia for Earth Day, he engaged in discussions beyond clean energy proposals with Sen. Bernie Sanders. Sanders, a key figure in clean energy policies, raised concerns about the humanitarian situation in Gaza and urged Biden to leverage newly authorized funding to influence Israel's actions.

Progressive voices within the Democratic Party are pressing the administration to rethink its approach to Israel amid growing protests over Gaza's humanitarian crisis. These demonstrations, labeled "Genocide Joe" by some, have intensified on college campuses, leading to clashes with law enforcement and concerns about antisemitism.

Columbia University, where protests are most fervent, has shifted to hybrid classes due to escalating tensions. Second gentleman Doug Emhoff discussed addressing antisemitism with Jewish leaders on campus, though Biden opted not to visit Columbia during his New York events, citing security and political considerations.

Amidst calls for action, Speaker Mike Johnson, a leading Republican, visited campuses to demand protection for Jewish students and discussed mobilizing the National Guard if necessary. While Biden has faced protests at public events for months, his stance remains unchanged, recognizing the right to dissent but condemning actions targeting Jewish students.

While the protests represent a minority view, some senior advisers acknowledge the seriousness of threats against Jewish students. Recent polling indicates that while young voters sympathize with both Israelis and Palestinians, Biden's handling of the Middle East situation is a lower priority compared to the economy.

Despite dissatisfaction with Israel's conduct in the conflict, Biden signed a $16 billion aid package for Israel. However, the White House is evaluating Israel's compliance with humanitarian laws and could adjust support accordingly. Biden's diplomatic response to Sanders' concerns reflects the complexity of the situation, with progressives questioning the administration's stance on accountability.
