Eight-foot barrier erected to block tourist photos of Mount Fuji

The picturesque town of Fujikawaguchiko, near Mount Fuji in Japan, is facing issues of overtourism due to an influx of foreign tourists seeking the perfect selfie spot. Visitors flock to a convenience store called Lawson's to capture the contrast between the vibrant shop and the serene backdrop of Mount Fuji. However, this has led to problems such as littering and disregarding traffic rules, prompting local authorities to take action.

To address these issues, the town is installing a giant mesh barrier measuring eight feet high and 66 feet across to obstruct the view of Mount Fuji from the selfie spot. Despite efforts to warn tourists through signs and security guards, the situation has persisted, leading to the decision to erect the barrier.

This move reflects a larger problem of overtourism in Japan, particularly around iconic sites like Mount Fuji. The country experienced record-breaking tourism numbers in March 2024, exacerbating issues such as garbage accumulation and environmental degradation. To manage the overcrowding, Yamanashi prefectural government has implemented measures such as daily hiker limits and mandatory fees.

Similar actions have been taken in other tourist destinations worldwide, such as the Austrian town of Hallstatt, which erected a fence to deter selfie-takers amidst overwhelming visitor numbers. These initiatives aim to strike a balance between tourism promotion and preserving the natural and cultural heritage of these iconic locations.
