Harvey Weinstein, the disgraced movie mogul whose 2020 rape conviction in New York was recently overturned, has been hospitalized due to health concerns, according to his lawyer Arthur Aidala. Aidala stated that Weinstein was transferred to a Manhattan hospital on Friday, remaining in custody after a separate conviction for rape in Los Angeles.
Describing Weinstein's health as "somewhat of a train wreck," Aidala mentioned that his client requires significant medical assistance. The decision to move him to the hospital came after the New York City Department of Correction determined that Weinstein needed immediate medical attention.
While Weinstein's exact condition remains undisclosed, a spokesperson for the corrections department confirmed that he is currently under custody at Bellevue Hospital. He was relocated from the Mohawk Correctional Facility to the Rikers Island jail complex earlier on Friday.
Weinstein's legal team has previously cited his health issues, including diabetes, sleep apnea, and heart and eye problems. In 2020, he spent five days hospitalized due to ongoing heart problems and chest pains.
Weinstein's attorney mentioned that he is scheduled to meet with Weinstein on Monday ahead of his court appearance on Wednesday. The New York Court of Appeals overturned Weinstein's conviction earlier in the week, citing an unfair trial where prosecutors presented witnesses whose accusations were not part of the charges against him, leading to a new trial being ordered.
In his 2020 trial, Weinstein was convicted of sexually assaulting Mimi Haleyi, a former production assistant, in 2006 and raping Jessica Mann, a former aspiring actress, in 2013. He was sentenced to 23 years in prison. Additionally, Weinstein was sentenced in California last year to 16 years for raping an Italian model and actress in a Beverly Hills hotel in 2013.
