President Biden will use TikTok throughout the campaign

Despite signing the bill that could lead to a ban on TikTok in the U.S., President Joe Biden intends to continue using the platform for his re-election campaign efforts. The Financial Times reports that Biden sees TikTok as a valuable tool for reaching young voters, even amidst security concerns regarding the app's ownership by a Chinese company.

The bill signed by Biden requires TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, to divest itself from the app within a year, with a deadline set for January 19, the day before the presidential inauguration. Security concerns raised by lawmakers stem from fears that user data could be handed over to the Chinese government, although TikTok has denied such allegations.

With over 170 million American users, Biden's campaign recognizes the platform's extensive reach among the population, particularly young voters. A Biden campaign official emphasized the importance of leveraging every available tool to engage with voters, stating, "When the stakes are this high in the election, we are going to use every tool we have to reach young voters where they are." The official also mentioned implementing enhanced security measures on the platform.

Despite concerns, Biden first joined TikTok on the day of the Super Bowl and has since posted numerous videos, amassing millions of likes. While his account has garnered over 300,000 followers, the president's presence on the platform underscores the campaign's commitment to utilizing social media to connect with voters, even amid regulatory challenges.
