Search for Japanese helicopter crews

Two Japanese navy SH-60k helicopters carrying eight crew members went missing near the Izu Islands, sparking a search and rescue operation. One crew member has been confirmed dead, and the search continues for the remaining seven. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida expressed regret over the tragedy, emphasizing the difficult training conditions the crew faced. The cause of the crash remains unclear, with initial investigations revealing no technical problems. The helicopters were engaged in nighttime anti-submarine drills when communication was lost. A major search operation involving ships and aircraft has been underway, resulting in the recovery of one body and debris from both aircraft. The incident occurred in an area where no other vessels or aircraft were present, suggesting no external involvement. Japan has increased defense cooperation with other countries in response to regional tensions, including China's assertiveness. This incident follows a similar crash involving a Japanese army helicopter in April 2023, with no survivors.
