Tesla is recalling its Cybertrucks

Tesla is recalling nearly 4,000 of its Cybertrucks due to a potentially dangerous issue with the accelerator pedal. The problem arises from an unapproved change during production that introduced soap as a lubricant to aid in assembling the pad onto the accelerator pedal. This soap residue can reduce the retention of the pad, causing it to dislodge when high force is applied to the pedal. Consequently, the pedal may become stuck in the down position, posing a safety risk to drivers.

The recall affects all Model Year 2024 Cybertruck vehicles manufactured from November 13, 2023, to April 4, 2024. This likely includes the majority, if not all, of the Cybertrucks currently on US roads.

Unlike some Tesla recalls that can be addressed through over-the-air software updates, this issue requires physical repair at Tesla service centers. Owners will be notified via letters and will need to bring their vehicles in for the necessary repairs, which will be performed free of charge.

The accelerator sticking problem was initially reported in social media and online discussion groups, prompting the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to investigate. Tesla has yet to comment on the recall.
