Train derailed in New Mexico on Friday

A significant train derailment occurred in New Mexico on Friday afternoon, involving thirty-five rail cars and leading to evacuations and the closure of a portion of Interstate 40. The incident occurred near the state line with Arizona, prompting response from McKinley County Fire & Rescue.

Six of the derailed train cars were transporting propane, heightening concerns about safety and necessitating evacuation orders for residents within a two-mile radius of the derailment site. Interstate 40 has been shut down in both directions, with traffic rerouted, and there is currently no estimated time for the road to reopen, according to New Mexico State Police.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is sending investigators to the scene to document the incident and examine the train and equipment involved. BNSF Railway, the operator of the train, is conducting air monitoring and fire suppression assessments at the site.

Fortunately, no injuries have been reported, and BNSF is working with displaced residents to provide necessary lodging and accommodations. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg and Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs both addressed the incident, emphasizing coordination efforts and expressing readiness to support affected communities.
