Trump Campaign may have Hidden Millions in Lawyer Payments

Hours after The Daily Beast published a report uncovering how Donald Trump's presidential campaign and associated PACs are funneling millions in legal fees through a GOP compliance firm, a new ethics complaint has been filed against them. The nonprofit watchdog Campaign Legal Center filed the complaint with the Federal Election Commission (FEC), alleging violations of federal reporting rules and the ban on corporate contributions.

The complaint targets Trump and his affiliated PACs for obscuring the true recipients of legal payments by routing them through the GOP compliance firm Red Curve Solutions. The arrangement, which involves reimbursing Red Curve for advanced legal costs, raises concerns about potential violations of campaign finance laws. Red Curve, primarily a political accounting firm, lacks a history of providing legal services, prompting questions about the true nature of the legal work being paid for and the ultimate beneficiaries of these payments.

CLC argues that this scheme deprives the public of transparency regarding how Trump's political groups are spending donor funds, especially given the substantial legal expenses incurred during election cycles. The complaint calls for an immediate FEC investigation into the ongoing arrangement.

The filing details the reimbursement arrangement between the Trump committees and Red Curve since December 2022, highlighting discrepancies in reporting and potential violations of campaign finance regulations. Notably, the complaint underscores the lack of clarity regarding the purpose of these payments and the individuals or entities benefiting from them.

The document also draws parallels with past FEC rulings on similar payment and reporting arrangements deemed unlawful. Despite the potential implications, the complaint now rests with the FEC's Office of General Counsel for further investigation.

It's worth noting that previous campaign finance cases against Trump have been stymied by Republican commissioners within the FEC, raising concerns about the prospects of enforcement action in this instance.
