Unexploded WWII Bomb Found Near German Soccer Stadium to Be Defused

An unexploded World War II bomb, weighing 500 kilograms (1,102 pounds), has been discovered near the home stadium of Bundesliga soccer club Mainz 05. The bomb, of American origin, was found during construction work, prompting the evacuation of the local area.

Although Mainz 05's MEWA Arena sits just outside the 750-meter (roughly 2,460 feet) evacuation radius, the club took precautionary measures, moving its press conference to Thursday and closing the club shop on Friday, when the bomb is scheduled to be defused.

Despite the discovery, the upcoming match between Mainz 05 and FC Köln on Sunday, crucial for both teams' fight to avoid relegation, will not be impacted, according to the club.

The defusal process, which began midday local time, is expected to impact around 3,500 people. In Germany, the presence of unexploded WWII ordnance is common, necessitating precautionary measures during construction activities.
