US arms deployed in Ukrainian conflict

Here are the key points from the recent developments regarding Ukraine's use of longer-range US missiles against Russia:

  1. Confirmation of US Support: American officials have confirmed that Ukraine has begun using longer-range ballistic missiles against Russia, which were provided secretly by the US. These missiles were part of a previous US support package and arrived in Ukraine this month.

  2. ATACMS Missiles: The missiles provided to Ukraine are the longer-range version of the Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS), which can strike targets up to 300km (186 miles) away. They were used to strike Russian targets in occupied Crimea and in the occupied port city of Berdyansk.

  3. US Approval and Concerns: President Joe Biden reportedly approved the provision of these missiles in February, although the decision was not publicly announced initially to maintain operational security. There were concerns about compromising US military readiness and escalating the conflict if Ukraine used the missiles to strike inside Russian territory.

  4. Further Aid Expected: The US plans to send more aid to Ukraine, including additional weaponry. This aid package, worth $61bn, was signed by President Biden on Wednesday, and it includes economic and military support.

  5. Response and Expectations: Russia downplayed the significance of the new weaponry, stating that it would not fundamentally change the outcome of the war. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the aid package, emphasizing the need to counter Russian aggression and regain lost territory.

  6. Ongoing Conflict: The conflict between Ukraine and Russia has resulted in significant casualties and displacement since Russia's invasion in February 2022. Ukrainian forces have faced challenges due to shortages of ammunition and air defense systems, leading to calls for increased support from Western allies.
