Warning Issued to E-Bike Users: Indoor Charging Poses Fire Hazard

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service (DWFRS) has issued a stern warning to e-bike and e-scooter users about the dangers of charging their devices indoors and leaving them unattended. This caution comes after a series of incidents, including a house fire, which highlights the potential risks associated with improper charging and storage of lithium-ion batteries.
Graham Kewley, a representative from DWFRS, emphasized that these batteries store a significant amount of energy and can overheat, leading to fires. He stressed that improper use can cause an explosive force, resulting in devastating consequences. With the increasing popularity of e-bikes and e-scooters, the fire service is urging owners to take necessary precautions to prevent such incidents.
Two incidents over the past weekend alone have prompted this warning. In one instance, an e-bike caught fire while charging in Swindon, causing significant damage to a property. This serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers of indoor charging.
To mitigate these risks, owners are advised to ensure they have working smoke alarms installed in their homes. Additionally, consideration should be given to installing heat alarms in areas where charging points are located, such as garages or kitchens. It is crucial to only charge batteries while awake and alert, allowing for prompt response in the event of a fire.
Kewley emphasized the importance of proper storage, charging, and maintenance of lithium-ion batteries. If damaged or used incorrectly, these batteries can release energy in an uncontrolled manner, leading to explosive forces and significant fires.
In light of these incidents, e-bike and e-scooter users are urged to exercise caution and follow safety guidelines to prevent such incidents. By taking necessary precautions, owners can enjoy their devices while minimizing the risk of fire hazards.
Key safety tips include:
  • Ensuring working smoke alarms are installed in the home
  • Considering heat alarms in areas where charging points are located
  • Charging batteries only while awake and alert
  • Proper storage and maintenance of lithium-ion batteries
  • Avoiding damage to batteries and using them correctly
By following these guidelines, e-bike and e-scooter users can significantly reduce the risk of fire hazards and enjoy their devices with peace of mind.
