A mysterious Roman artefact to be displayed publicly

A mysterious Roman artefact, discovered by a group of amateur archaeologists in Norton Disney, Lincolnshire, is set to go on public display for the first time at Lincoln Museum. The 12-sided object, known as a dodecahedron, is one of only 33 ever found in Britain and the first to be discovered in the Midlands.
Measuring approximately 3 inches tall and weighing half a pound, the artefact is one of the largest of its kind and is believed to have been buried around 1,700 years ago. Despite extensive research, the purpose of the dodecahedron remains unknown, sparking imagination and speculation among experts and enthusiasts alike.
Richard Parker, secretary of the Norton Disney History and Archaeology Group, described the discovery as a "privilege" and acknowledged the enigma surrounding the object's use. "We are no closer to finding out exactly what it is and what it might have been used for," he admitted. "Magic, rituals, or religion - we perhaps may never know."
The dodecahedron was unearthed in a former large pit on top of a hill, suggesting it was deliberately placed there. Its origins date back to the 1st Century, with some experts believing it may be linked to Roman rituals or religion. However, there are no references to such objects in any Roman texts, adding to the mystery.
The artefact will be on display at Lincoln Museum as part of the city's Festival of History, alongside other finds from across the city and county. Visitors can learn more about Lincoln's Roman past and explore the remains of the Roman gateway, among other exhibits. Andrea Martin, exhibitions and interpretations manager at the museum, hailed the display as "a real coup" for local history fans and visitors.
The festival offers a unique opportunity for residents and visitors to discover more about Lincoln's story and the region's rich history. The Norton Disney dodecahedron is a fascinating piece of the puzzle, and its enigmatic presence is sure to captivate audiences. As the volunteers who discovered the artefact plan to return to the site in search of more clues, the mystery of the dodecahedron remains a compelling and intriguing chapter in Lincoln's history.
