Trump's valet promised presidential pardon

The recently unsealed court filings in the criminal case involving Donald Trump’s valet, Walt Nauta, shed light on an alleged offer of a pardon from Trump if Nauta was charged with lying to the FBI. According to notes from an FBI interview with a witness referred to as “Person 16,” Nauta was told he would receive a pardon in 2024 if charged with lying to the FBI.

Nauta, along with Trump, was charged in June of the previous year with lying to the FBI and obstructing the investigation. Both individuals have pleaded not guilty to the charges. Nauta's attorney declined to comment, while Trump's attorneys have not responded to inquiries.

The witness, who had worked in Trump’s White House, revealed the alleged offer of a pardon during an FBI interview in November 2022. The witness had not spoken to Nauta since Trump was in office, and it remains unclear how they came to know about the offer.

According to the interview summary, the witness also advised Trump to return any materials to the National Archives during a visit to Mar-a-Lago in November 2021, warning him not to provide a reason for indictment.

The FBI executed a search warrant at Mar-a-Lago in August 2022 to retrieve classified material. The witness's account suggests concerns about recording the interview due to potential risks in the "Trump world."
